MÄlama Hula O NÄ Keiki – Hula Competition
The goal of the 1st Annual San Diego Shaka Fest “HoÊ»omau Hula O Keiki†Competition on Saturday April 25, 2015 is to establish a venue for children to showcase their reverence to the Hawaiian culture and their mastery of ancient hula. The San Diego Shaka Fest also creates opportunities to educate the hÄlau and other visitors on Hawaiian crafts such as ipu making, lei making,  and athletics such as Hawaiian outrigger canoe racing and Stand Up Paddle racing.
This year’s 1st Annual “HoÊ»omau Hula O NÄ Keiki™†Hula Competition is dedicated to Kumu Hula Auntie Barbara Pualani Ke Anuenue Finneran.  Auntie Barbara, as her students fondly call her, studied and taught under Kumu Hula Joan Nauoeemilikaaokalikookalanialoha S. Lindsey for 12 years on the island of OÊ»ahu before moving to San Diego and opening her own hÄlau (school). Pualani’s Hula Studio opened in 1976 and shared Hula and other Polynesian traditions until closing in May of 2013. During that time Auntie Barbara strived to instill in her haumÄna (students) the deep respect she was taught for the time honored traditions of hula.
In the spirit of aloha, we welcome all hula hÄlau, studios, schools, their ‘ohana, and the public to our 1st Annual HoÊ»omau Hula O NÄ Keikiâ„¢ keiki hula competition at our 2nd Annual San Diego Shaka fest!
If your  hÄlau, studio, or school would like to compete in our keiki hula competition please email us at shaka@sandiegoshakafest.com and we will email you or U.S. mail you a competition packet.
